PAINT ON A HAPPY FACE.

There are many layers of problems within Hospitality… or for that matter any industry that often go unsaid, not heard or not done anything about. The layers get darker and deeper. Harder to share and leave more damaging repercussions to body, mind and soul. A danger for Hospitality that is always expected to paint on a happy face.

SLICE OF PARADISE.

There’s a ‘Slice of Paradise’ we all dream of. Reading our fortune and where our future will take us. Paradise doing what they love by a beach night and day, that Megan, Nat and Imie share; from St.Lucia to Columbia and the Isle of Wight. But as fortune may tell through tarot, darkness within can spiral us out of control and away from that sweet paradise if we let it.

TIME OUT.

There’s never been enough time to read that book, watch that show, paint those walls or even learn how to make kimchi. One of the positives from lockdown was the time. Something that goes so quickly, everything slowed down for everyone, and the last year gave many the opportunity to take time out from our work lives and take stock of things. It’s right maybe now we question how much time is healthy to be in a kitchen, office or in front of a screen. The clock is ticking to get the best out of our lives, and it’s ok to take time out from our busy days and make time for ourselves.⠀

AMONG WOLVES.

This is the Cherokee story of a grandfather telling his grandson of the terrible battle inside him between two wolves. One is fear, anger, envy, greed, arrogance and ego. The other is peace, love, hope, humility, empathy, generosity, compassion and faith. The Grandson asks “which will win?”. To which the Grandfather replies… “whichever you feed the most”. Its a tale that the last year and our lives has fed in all of us. That bad thoughts and actions can creep up behind and bite us if we feed them.

ALWAYS ON/OFF.

The parallels between artists, chefs, bartenders and anyone with anti-social hours is reflected in the character that always has it’s light ‘on’. Those late nights and early mornings when many are ‘off’ enjoying themselves or just getting some needed rest. Often when we are so driven and working towards our goals, sacrifices are made. Birthdays. Weddings. That cheeky pint with mates. Relationships. All from shining a light on a future where we hope hard work pays off, but also light we can bring to inequalities that have become increasingly more visible too.

A LOVE & HATE

PORTRAIT OF IRAN.

There’s a beautiful sense of Hospitality through sharing the food of different cultures, that you can truly enjoy and learn more about them. But some want tradition to be exclusive. There’s often an old way of thinking and doing things, where strong beliefs kick under the table. Where sharing heritage is frowned upon. Sometimes things need to change and its up to us to rise above, sit together and share as one truly inclusive world.

ME RIGHT NOW.

The pandemic has shaken everything. Worry, happiness… a heavy dash of mixed emotions. Being scared, seeing hope and then having them taken away. We’ve had to adjust and take measure to be able to take on a crazy task, changing us and how we do things. Sometimes in colourful ways and words that are not all good or healthy. The experience has scrambled our brains turning it into spaghetti and a state that has left many feeling groggy.

STAYING AFLOAT WITH FRIEND & FOE.

During the Pandemic, the Hospitality community came together to stay afloat, ensuring their ‘castles’ didn’t wash away. But with the worry that the new sense of camaraderie may start to slip as things reopen and return to ‘normal’, it becomes a more dog-eat-dog industry, and sunny days may be spent adrift or even scuttled by friend and foe.

SPLIT MINDS.

The Pandemic has left many with split minds. The emotional turmoil that wafts in the air has split many between excitement for grabbing that first seat at their favourite venue, and those that carry heavy clouds of anxiety for going out given the palpable shifts of emotions caught in the wind. Two sides that really need to be stitched together with empathy and community spirit, but not only that… that all the inner reflection we’ve had of what a better world could be, doesn’t just rise like hot air and disperse. Forgotten.

TRULY FEEDING

OUR FUTURE.

It can feel that as we get older, we have all the answers. However, with a childish wonder we have a chance to learn something even when we think we know it all. We can see that in our children who are so open to learning, with an innocence that asks simple questions. We need to let go of our ego and look at things with

a child’s simplicity to ask some tough questions and seek some honest answers that we can feed our future and that

of future generations.

TASTY HASTE.

What you are is what you eat. Many don’t express how they feel and the similar demons they are probably sharing with others, only for that feeling to eat them from the inside out.

It’s important we learn to share.

DECANTED DEMON.

“But where are you really from?” Too often a conversation where we can be made to feel like strangers even in our own country. This piece tackles exclusion from asking a question, to more aggressive actions directed at people perceived as foreign or strange. Shocking in a world of such cultural diversity that makes us stronger and better as humankind, and a negativity we have to decant from our past, present and future.

WALK THROUGH HELL.

“If you’re going through Hell, keep going”, Winston Churchill. We ALL experience an event in our life that flips us upside down and inside out. We can find ourselves alone. However when you’re in your own private hell, you can grow and become stronger. Andrew’s hopes, dreams and fears reside in that apocalypse. Changing elements of your life to become a better person. But we’re not in heaven here people. NO ONE is perfect. You can always preach, but knowing your triggers and still failing yourself at times… falling into a ditch, only to get back up is part of the struggle and the strength we gain that defines us. “Whatever doesn’t kill you, simply makes you stranger”.

TWO FACE.

There are ‘Two Faces’ to every story. We all wear masks to hide how we feel. Whether its the face we put on during work, life or the through unlimited use of social platforms; there are two sides. None is more obvious than now, flicking through the constant positive posts desperately masking the trauma. But you know what… at a time like this, it truly is ok, to not be ok.

VOICE/WE ARE.

Too often during one’s career, we can face oppression. Titles and ego can often make people think about themselves and their beliefs. Beliefs that absurdly still mean gender and race inequality even in the 21st century. This piece is inspired by the Suffragettes; being heard as a strong female voice and a hope that fighting for what’s right will lead to deserved success and a true humility exempt of ego to inspire, nurture and grow other amazing talent without the thought of labels or titles.

WHAT COULD BE.

“My hope, my dream, my fear is a more sustainable world... but I don’t think I’ll ever see it in my lifetime”. Lee.

At a time where we think so much of our health, we’ve seen nature get to breathe a sigh of relief… but for how long? There Earth is a heartbreaking and beautiful story, that may have an ending sooner than we choose to think of ‘what could be’.
